10 Things You Didn't Know About Rome

Roma you beauty! There is so much that lies in you, unfolded, unwrapped, mystic and magnetic, that I am pulled towards to you. Persistently surprising at every nook and corner, Rome is a city that demands and deserves being a dream of every traveller. The first time you visit, the city shows you only its touristy path that millions of travellers take every time. On your second visit perhaps, you might start living the local vibe. The third time is a charm, they say and the city opens up to you, with its secrets, wide and deep.
But yes, most of us have only one chance to visit the city and explore an array ofthings to do in Rome. Theres a plethora of information that surrounds this city which is hotspot for history, art, culture and religion. But to really, really understand the city in a true sense, you need to go off the beaten path and explore the unknown.
[ADD]
Heres a list of 10 things you probably didnt know about Rome and which, will totally change your experience of the city:

1. Pizza! Yes, for Breakfast; Cappuccino Only for Breakfast!

Italian food needs no introduction. But what very few of us know is about the breakfast in Rome. The bakeries in Rome open as early as 4 am and serve the freshest breads, cornetto (Italian version of croissant) and even pizza! Yes, the love for pizzas is undying and Romans have Pizza Bianca (white pizza) for breakfast. The bakeries smell of this fresh pizza every morning and trust me, with a dash of olive oil and sprinkle of sea salt, you dont really need options! Wash It down with a cup of cappuccino (which, according to the citys conventional beliefs should be only had for breakfast) and start your day fresh and charged!

2. St. Peter's Basilica Tricks You With Optical Illusion

Correct me if I am wrong, but the objects should appear bigger as you move closer to them, isnt it? Visit the via Piccolomini and you will have a grand view of the dome of the basilica. What will surprise you is, as you walk or drive towards the dome, it will appear smaller. You have to literally see it to believe it!
Thanks to the mind-blowing geometric calculations of Bernini, the construction of basilica and the squares has many such tricking points. In the square, the elliptical design with huge columns is done in four rows. But when you stand at a particular spot, you will only be able to see the first row and the other three will magically disappear.

3. Pope Had a Secret Passage out of the Vatican Which Can Still Be Accessed

Connecting the Vatican and the Castel Sant'Angelo is the Passetto di Borgo. It appears to be just another stone pathway. What many of us dont know is that, it has a secret passage way hidden in its wall which was built for Papal escape in case of emergency. Pope Alexander VI overlooked the construction of the same and also used it against the French invaders couple of years later.
Today, the passage is open for the visitors for a limited period in summer.

4. You Don't Get Spaghetti Meatballs in Rome

There is no doubt that Italians love their pasta. But if you are looking for a dish like spaghetti meatballs on your trip to Rome, you will get strange glances from the local restaurants. This dish is not roman and was invented by Italian immigrants of USA. The most popular pasta dishes in Rome include Cacio e Pepe, Spaghetti Alla, Carbonara and Da Danilo. A unique addition to pasta dishes is artichokes which has given a protected origin status owing its authenticity!
The love for pasta in Rome is so much that, there is an exclusive Pasta Museum in the city; bet you didnt know about it!

5. There Is a Pyramid in Rome

Yes! Pyramids might have originated in the deserts of Egypt. When Romans ruled over the land of Pharos, they must have been influenced by this exceptional design and may be that is why; there is a Pyramid in Rome as well. Dating back to 18 to 12 BC, the Pyramid of Cestius houses the tomb of Gaius Cestius who was a magistrate and an important council member of the then religious corporation that influenced Rome.

Well preserved, dauntingly tall and strikingly different in the backdrop of Roman Sky, visit this Pyramid which stands near Porta San Paolo on your visit!

6. You Can Drink Water From Nasoni- the Public Taps of Rome

Youll always save on bottled water costs while travelling in Rome. The city is dotted with cast iron taps that serve perfectly fresh, cold and safe drinking water. Over 2500 Nasoni or taps are scattered around the city that date back to the late 19th century. With a distinctive cylindrical shape that resembles a nose (thats why the name Nasoni), these taps supply water when you press the small hole at the top which pushed the water out from the tap. A classic piece of engineering to avoid running taps and a great source of fresh water while sightseeing!

7. The Dying Place of Julius Caesar Is Today a Cat Sanctuary

First of all, there is a huge misconception about the death site of the world famous Roman politician Julius Caesar. While the Temple of Caesar in Roman forum is the site of his cremation, he was actually assassinated in Largo di Torre Argentina, a huge square that displays the ruins of the Pompoeys theatre in Rome.

As you pass by the set of ruins that date back to 4th century BC today is a cat sanctuary that houses several cats that live in harmony and are taken care by volunteering groups! Rome also has a no-kill law for homeless cats and they have special citizen-like rights; good news for Cat lovers!

8. There Are More Than 900 Churches in Rome

This wouldnt really come as surprise, but indeed the fact that Rome has more than 900+ churches is striking. Going back to as old as the 4th century AD, if you plan to take a tour to even the most prominent ones, a week wont be enough!

9. Rome Has a Shrine of Its Only Female Pope

There is still a lot of conjecture about whether Rome (or rather Vatican) really had a female Pope or not. But just a walk away from the Colosseum, there stands a shrine of Pope Joan who is believed to the only Pope in the history of Vatican. While most scholars regard it to be a legend, according to the story, she reigned as Pope for few years in the middle ages.
A talented and intelligent woman in her right, her gender was revealed when she gave birth to her only child, shortly after which she died (due to natural death or possibly a murder). After the revelation, the Vatica removed any records or her reign.
Legend or truth, well never know; but you can visit her shrine in Rome

10. A Cannon Fires Every Day at Noon

While you are traversing around the beautiful boulevards of Rome, at 12 pm, you will be baffled with a loud shot of Canon being fired! A tradition embedded in the history of Rome by Pope Pius IX since the mid-19th century, the firing of Canon would help the then clock towers in the city to adjust their timing and be in-sync.
Although today, one doesnt need a canon shot to set timings, the tradition continues and the canon fires from the top of the Gianicolo hill.
Experience Rome on the lines of these off the beaten path things and youll thank us later!

10 Oldest Languages Still Spoken In The World Today

$

0
Just as the human race evolves, so does the spoken word. Over time and generations languages change, some minutely while others branch out into different dialects altogether. Several factors from geography to outside influences affect a gradual change in the native tongue of people. English, for example, is evolving on a daily basis owing to the internet age and globalization; the Oxford English Dictionary is constantly adding new words. However, it is generally agreed that most modern languages have evolved from a select few ancient languages like Sanskrit, Latin, Gaelic, Farsi etc. to name a few. While most old languages are no longer in use except maybe in scripture or historic text, some have endured and remained largely unchanged.

Here are those oldest languages still spoken in the world.

1. Hebrew

Country: Israel

A language that is almost 3000 years old, Hebrew almost risked becoming a defunct language around 400 CE. But when Zionism gained momentum in the last two centuries, it became the official language of Israel. Today it is spoken by Jews all around the world. Although Modern Hebrew is slightly different owing to Yiddish (another Jewish language) influences, almost all Jews read and understand the version of the Old Testament quite precisely.

2. Tamil

Country: India, Sri Lanka, Singapore

Tamil is probably one of the most ancient languages on this list; the oldest records show that it has been spoken for over 2000 years. A Dravidian language, still widely in use in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, it is also the official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore. Tamil can be classified into Classical Tamil, Modern Tamil, and Colloquial Tamil; all three forms are currently in use.

3. Persian

Country: Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan

One of the oldest languages still spoken in the world, also known as Farsi, it is spoken by over 100 million speakers around the world. Owing to political reasons, it goes by the name Dari in Afghanistan and Tajiki in Tajikistan, however, it is essentially the same language with very little variation. Over the centuries it has had considerable influence on other languages, especially Urdu. Persian literature, poetry, and prose have great historical significance and have been studied by scholars and linguists alike.

4. Lithuanian

Country: Lithuania, Poland

While most European languages belong to the Indo-European branch, Lithuanian is said to have retained more characteristics of the older origin languages of the Proto-Indo-European category. It is said to be the most conservative Baltic language. The archaic features still present in the language liken into the more ancient languages like Sanskrit or Ancient Greek. It is the official language of Lithuania and also recognized as a minority language in Poland.

Today it is spoken is one form or another by 16% of the worlds population. While Old Chinese in its pure form may have died out, there are several dialects that have stemmed from it and retain several characteristic elements. The most widely spoken variations today are Mandarin and Cantonese.

6. Basque

Country: Spain, France

Basque is a language unlike any other in Europe. It is spoken only in the Basque Country comprising a region in northern Spain and southwestern France. It is said to be a surviving language from the pre-Indo-European era and is considered an isolate language without common roots with any other. There is no conclusive evidence to show the origin of the language, however, it has been influenced and has, in turn, influenced other Romance languages over time.

7.  Latin

Country: Vatican City

Latin is a classical language belonging to the Indo-European classification. It is the root and origin of many European languages. The oldest form of the language, Old Latin was spoken in the Roman Kingdom. Today it is the official language of the Vatican City and is fluently spoken by the clergy. It is also recognized as an official language in Poland. Several schools and educational institutions around the world offer Latin as a language course.

8. Arabic

Country: Official Language in 28 states

Arabic was spoken as far back as the Iron Age by the people of Arabia. Today it is the official language of the entire Arab world and spoken by the diaspora across the globe. Like all languages, it has dialects and branches, however, the commonality is undeniable. The modern text of the language is derived straight from the Quran and is known as Classical Arabic, which is the base of Modern Standard Arabic. There are approximately 420 million Arabic speakers in the world today.

9. Irish Gaelic

Country: Republic of Ireland, Nothern Ireland

Irish Gaelic is spoken by a minority of natives in Ireland today and known as a second language by many. It originates from the Celtic branch of Indo-European Languages. Primitive Irish had developed written text around 4th century AD, long before the advent of Latin text. Currently, Irish is recognized as the national language of the Republic of Ireland and officially a minority language in Northern Ireland.

10. Greek

Image Source: shankar s. / Flickr

Country: Greece, Cyprus

While Modern Greek has evolved considerably from the version used in ancient times, it still is one of the most historic living languages. There are over 34 centuries worth of records in the written word. Today it is the official language of Greece and Cyprus.

The importance of language has been key to the development of the human race. Today globalization demands that people speak at least two or more languages in order to communicate. These ancient languages have survived the test of time and are still around owing to their functionality, influence, and popularity.

The Mesmerizing Tribal Arts of Madhya Pradesh!

$

The vast Indian subcontinent throughout its recorded history has seen the rise and fall of great civilizations, new religions being born & nurtured and become a melting pot for various cultures to intermingle & flourish. Though history remembers and recognizes great rulers, their kingdoms and exploits, the significance of some of the most ancient Indian natives is lost in the sands of time. Tribal folks, or Adivasis, as they are referred to in Hindi, have called India home since time immemorial, predating even the Vedic era.

Madhya Pradesh is one of the Indian states with a sizeable number of Adivasis still existing in their natural habitat and sticking to their ancient traditions. Though modernization has forced them to look for alternate means of survival, one aspect that they have stayed true to is their love for arts and crafts. Tribal art is still much sought after, and provides many tribes a consistent source of income. Skills, honed with countless years of practice, have passed on orally and visually amongst families. Two of the major tribes that have a very significant presence in Tribal art forms in Madhya Pradesh are the Bhils and Gonds. Apart from these 2, the Baiga, Korku, Mariya, Sahariya and many others have also played essential roles in the development of Adivasi arts and crafts.
Some of the most spectacular Tribal art forms that are the pride of Madhya Pradesh are:

Mandana Paintings

Usually drawn for religious and auspicious ceremonies, Mandanas are intricate floor paintings, so symmetrical and visually stunning, that it looks impossible to replicate them by hand. The surface is usually prepared with a mix of clay, cow dung and red soil, while patterns are drawn with chalk or lime powder.

Chitravan and Pana

A very fascinating art form of Madhya Pradesh, Chitravan also has roots in religious ceremonies. These exceptionally beautiful wall paintings usually show depictions of celestial beings, animals & birds, gods-goddesses and plants. The painting requires extreme dexterity as no outline is drawn initially and each stroke shapes the final design. When these paintings are presented on paper, they take the name Pana.

Pithora Paintings

Prevalent amongst the Bhil tribes of Madhya Pradesh, Pithora paintings are more than just wonderful figures and patterns. Holding great religious importance, the creation of these art works involve a complete ceremony accompanied by music and dancing. What is interesting to note here is that earlier versions used to depict animals, plants and surrounding objects, and the ones present now have modern depictions like cars, planes, bikes and guns!

Gond Paintings

Originated in the tribal community Gond which also happens to be one of the largest Adivasi communities of India, the Gond Paintings comprise of intricately designed motifs and tattoos. What sets this art apart is the thought process that goes behind the creation of each piece. The Gond art form fuels on the ideology of uo;viewing a good image garners good luck and hence, these art pieces have adorned the walls of the huts of the community since ages. The art pieces are today available on a canvas and the dashes, dots and fine lines filled in unique shapes give it a striking edge. The bright colors state the individualism of this art form which also gained accolades internationally.

Thapa

Thapa drawings are usually made by women using household items like sindoor, ghee, kumkum and mehendi mixed with cow dung. The patterns are usually hand prints with varied depictions of gods and goddesses usually in a single color, though multiple colors might also be used. The spectacular patterns, drawn with utmost perfection, are supposed to protect the household from evil spirits and ailments.

Gudna Motifs

Practiced primarily by Gonds and Bhils, Gudna is not merely another wall or ground painting art form. This style of painting is performed on the body of tribe men and women! The body parts are pierced with a needle and this piercing is injected with lamp soot, harsingar flower juice or kumkum for adding color. This is used to create different patterns on the body parts which are supposed to ward off all evil, help in fertility and a prosperous harvest.

Vegetarian Travel Tips For Meat Free Vacation

tips for vegetarian travelers
Booking your flights, check. Booking your accommodation, check. Packing your bags, check. Taking your travel documents, check. So everything is done, you think; but have you ever thought of what you're going to do about food. If you have assumed that you'll deal with it later, especially considering the fact that you are a vegetarian then you are in for a surprise.

[ADD]

Except for a few countries that have options for vegetarian travellers, most others don't. So you will have to plan most of your stuff beforehand. To help you travel better and ease your minds from getting exhausted, we have come up with a guide for vegetarian travel that includes necessary tips and suggestions.

Plan your travel

The first step is to plan your trip properly. If you are flexible with the destination that you are travelling to then look for places where vegetarian food is easy to find. Some of the places that encourage vegetarianism include India, Ethiopia, Israel, Singapore, North America, Canada, Germany, Taiwan, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Choosing your destination wisely will save you plenty of time after reaching the place and makes it easier to manage. Research thoroughly about the place, you are going to visit, sketch a plan, and put it to action like James Bond.

While booking your flights, look for vegetarian options and the same applies for the hotels too. Book in a place that serves vegetarian food or at least inform them in advance regarding your taste for food and request them to prepare the food accordingly. And while you're packing sneak in some dried fruits, grain salads, nuts, granola bars, crackers, and few sealed jars of peanut butter. They will help you keep your hunger at bay while travelling.

Cook on your own

The best option for a vegetarian traveler to survive in a foreign land is to cook food on her own. Especially, if you are planning to stay in a single destination for more number of days, then book a hostel that comes with a kitchenette and allows you to cook. For best stay options at a cheaper price, use Couchsurfing or Airbnb. And for the recipe, just Google them, you will get a plenty of vegetarian food recipes which are totally easy to prepare.

One more advantage while cooking by your own self is that you know exactly what you are putting in the recipe. This will help you eat healthier and escape the usage of animal oils that are frequently used in many restaurants even when you ask for a vegetarian meal. You can also look for online vegetarian groups in the locality that you will be staying so that you can join them while they are having food and strike a bonding for life.

Try snacking than dining

vegetarian vacations

Always keep in snacks handy with you, because you will never know what food options you will be left with. When the going gets tough and you are not left with too many options, snacks are the only thing that you could turn to. They curb your hunger without adding too many calories. So that way you maintain your figure while travelling.

Fruits, veggies, salads, energy bars, raisins, peanuts, corn flakes, bread, cookies, and dried fruits are some of the best options for snacks. They are easier to find and doesn't require cooking. While you are shopping for snacks, always go with products that have more shelf life. This way you can store them for longer without having to go shopping again.

Keep ready-made products handy

This section is strictly not for those who follow a healthy diet and detest packed food. Remember the shelves in the supermarkets that carry a list of canned items that can just be heated and tasted, this point is all about making those work for you. What if you don't know how to cook but can manage with the basic stuff like heating and making noodles or pasta. This is where canned and packaged foods come to use.

From cup noodles to packed oats to processed cheese to canned corn niblets, you can find a variety of sealed and packed foods in most of the supermarkets. Pick those you wish to have and fill your kitchen. Although the packed foods are not good healthwise, they serve as a good alternative if you can't cook and want a better option than hitting the restaurants.

Learn the local term

Whenever you are planning to travel to a new destination, try to learn all the basic sentences that you would be required to use when in the new destination. This is really helpful not only for a vegetarian traveler but for every traveler who is planning to visit a foreign country. If you are a vegetarian traveler, you should learn the phrases like 'I am a vegetarian/I need vegetarian food/I don't eat meat' in the native language of the country you are travelling to.

And remember some places find it hard to decipher what you are trying to say so it is best to seek the help of the locals in understanding the best term that can be used in expressing your taste for food.

Dine in a restaurant

vegetarian restaurants

While snacking, eating out of canned food, and cooking on your own can be helpful and less expensive, at times you will feel the urge to eat in some place nice. So once in a while just go outside to treat yourself to a good vegetarian meal that is highlighted with flavors from the local cuisine and let your taste buds take control.

To find the best restaurants and stores that have vegetarian food try using websites like Happy cow and Vegman. They have plenty of suggestions that include reviews from the users, giving us personal insights into the specials of the restaurants and the experience.

Although eating at vegetarian restaurants are a bit expensive compared to the other restaurants, it is not bad in loosening your purse strings a little, occasionally. And while ordering just mention no meat or fish to explain your order better and if you don't find any suitable option in vegetarian food, you can request the chef for customization. There you have created your whole meal!

Be ready to explain

If you are a vegan and travelling to a new place with a new culture in existence, you will be faced with a lot of questions demanding an explanation for your choice of veganism. This maybe because of the fact that most people are still not aware of the ideology of being vegans. As a result, you will be faced with a lot of weird looks when you ask for a vegetarian meal or when you are found eating just vegetables and not meat.

During situations like these, the way you respond back matters a lot than the actual question itself. Give your explanation for considering veganism: be it cultural, religious, healthwise or personal reason. But don't push your reason too hard towards the listener, making the whole conversation turn out weird. And be sure to interact with the localites while dining along with them irrespective of you being a vegan. After all, what's the better way to understand the local culture and the cuisine than learning it from the locals?

Travelling for a vegetarian can be a little tougher than for a non-vegetarian but by proper planning and following the tips from above, you can make it really enjoyable and certainly a memorable experience.

Baner Is the New KP and We Are Totally Loving It!

Three years ago when I moved to this culturally rich, slow-paced yet full of opportunities, charming in its own way, city of Pune; I was not really sure about moving to Baner, which was a sleepy neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city.

I wished my office shifted to someplace like Koregaon Park(KP), which of course was THE place for Punekars to party, spend weekends or indulge into top notch leisure activities the city offered! With its array of fine dining restaurants, Quirky cafes and an international appeal (thanks to Osho ashram), Koregaon Park was where I would want to go for weekends.

And then just in couple of years after I moved here, Baner Happened! It was definitely not an overnight makeover, but the neighbourhood has transformed tremendously and is, definitely at par with Koregaon Park; were not complaining!

A neighbourhood that is chosen as a part of the Smart City Project by our PM has today become one of the best places in Pune to party, indulge and enjoy.
Why? Heres why we believe that Baner is the New KP and is actually better:

The HighStreet

Okay. So this one needs no introduction! I have seen people practically coming from far just to be here! The place has a totally international vibe including its name, just like London High Street or NYC High Street. Bustling with people from all generations, the HighStreet is impeccably well-maintained, glitters with pretty lights, has ample parking space within and around which makes it a perfect place to hangout, even if you dont want to visit any restaurant. Couple of quirky food trucks also pop-up at night (mostly weekends) making it a favourable place for both casual night out as well as for fine dining.

The Restaurants

While there is addition to this list practically every week, Baner is home to some excellent restaurants that serve variety of cuisines and offer a quirky ambience. KPs one-time exclusive places like The Great Punjab, Arthurs Theme and Malaka Spice have been here for a while and today, Baner also has legendary eat outs spots of Pune like Wadeshwar and Little Italys La Pizzeria. Add to that eccentric eats like the K-factory, Urban Foundry, InCongnito, Nawab Asia and Bubbsters and youve got a winner.

The Nightlife

In addition to old places like Kiva Ivy, Baner flaunts interesting places that offer great nightlife experience like the Effingut Brewerkz, Teddy Boy , Area 51, Apache High Street and Playboy Beer garden. These places pull huge crowd, especially during weekends and people dont mind waiting to get a table. If you thought you have to travel all the way to KP to get a taste of Punes Nightlife, youll be pleasantly surprised.

The Desert Places

Baner conjures a plethora of cute little desert bars where you can indulge to soothe your sweet tooth. Menchies for frozen yoghurts, Minus 18 degrees for pancakes and cheesecakes, Oh! So! Stoned for icecreams with liquor and Cream Stone for stone ice-cream prepared fresh in front of your eyes are crowded, and even in winters! Even the small eat-outs like Jalebi Junction and Ganesh Pan also offer great options and for cheap. Things like these makes Baner more like since KP. Because KP also has some hidden, cheap options those lie around its plush restaurants and eateries(Remember Momo's of 6th lane, KP?).

The Cafes

Caf culture is quintessentially international and Baner exhibits a wide range of cafes. Caf Coffee Day and Barista are a pass; people are actually looking for quieter places that offer a peaceful atmosphere to relax. Baner has some nice caf restaurants that serve food on the side of good coffee or tea. You can spot these cafes almost at every nook and corner and they are sometimes even in the hiding of a really plush residential area. Tea Trails, Caf Twos and Fours (that also welcomes pets), Caf ABC (Arts, Books, Chai) and Pagdandi Book and Chai Caf (which is a library caf and also hosts book reading events and discussions) add a rich cultural and artistic vibe to the neighbourhood.

The Retail Therapy

Definitely, KP has more boutiques, Salons and speciality stores than Baner, but Baner has interesting options directed towards the young working crowd. For pampering your body and soul, there are spas like Amantra and Four Fountains! But if at all you want to shop, just visit Aundh and Westend Mall which is just a drive away and youll get everything!

The Infrastructure

Yes, Koregaon Park has some of Punes most beautiful, lavish and extravagant properties. But what Baner has and KP doesnt is wide avenues sans the traffic. The traffic is better organised than KP and finding a good apartment in a nice residential complex in Baner is much easier (and cheaper) than in KP. Offering close proximity to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex (Balewadi Stadium), Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway and Hinjewadi IT Park is another plus, which makes Baner a top choice for young professionals. Also, plenty of start-ups are set up in Baner itself, making it even more of a preferred choice.

Living on the outskirts of the city is not bad after all and I am actually loving it. For me, Baner is really THE new KP!

No More Visa-On-Arrivals For Indians In Hong Kong

$

0
There will not be visa-on-arrival for Indian travelers to Hong Kong from Jan 23, 2017. Instead, a pre-arrival registration for Indian nationals will be put in place.
Applicants (Indian nationals) must apply online and successfully complete pre-arrival registration before they can visit or transit the HKSAR visa-free (if seeking to enter the HKSAR during transit). Pre-arrival registration is not required in direct transit by air and not leaving the airport transit area. The pre-arrival registration is valid for six months, during which the applicant can visit Hong Kong multiple times. Indian nationals must furnish an "approval slip before boarding a plane or ship to the city. Giving fake information on the registration form is liable to prosecution and a false document can lead to 14 years in jail.

An automated system will be used to evaluate risk and issue instant result on the information that will be provided by Indian nationals during the online registration. This information will include all their travel history and local itinerary. To review travelers, the immigration department had assessed the backgrounds of Indian asylum-seekers and come up with "a group of combined factors.
However, Indians holding an official or diplomatic passport are exempted from pre-arrival registrations. Indian nationals with a Hong Kong Travel Pass and who have enrolled for e-Channel service for frequent visitors are also exempted.

Despite the fact that Indian visitors are one of the highest spenders who contribute to the local economy, the plans to scrap visa-free entry for Indians were dropped by the Hong Kong authorities last year after representations from tourism and business bodies.

So, if you plan to travel to Bangkok in the near future, do it before January for a hassle-free journey.

An hour's drive from Pune and about 4 hours drive away from Mumbai, you are blessed to bespeak natures beauty at its purest form, nestled amidst crystalline Sahyadris and overlooking the blue waters of Mulshi lake is this wellness resort, Atmantan. True to its name Atmantan is a blend of Atma (Soul) + Mann (Mind) and Tan (Body), it focuses on cleansing of Atma or soul, revitalizing the Mann or Mind and re-energizing Tan or Body, the natural way. The wellness of the Mind, Body and Soul not only makes you healthy but also happy, peaceful and more refreshed than any other materialistic means to achieve the right balance can make you.

This 9-month-old luxury resort is a must visit place at least once in a year for those who take their health seriously and to those who dont, I bet you will start taking it seriously henceforth. The founders are Pune-based couple Sharmilee, a pranic healer and Nikhil Kapur, Entrepreneur and a triathlete ironman , both who are into fitness and wellness. No wonder they came up with something incredible like this.
At Atmantan , the motto and goal is transforming the mind body and soul through holistic practices. This 40-acre property offers  a beautiful and I can go as far as saying, breath-taking view of the mountains and the lake. Retreats and packages range from general, weight loss to wellness and master cleanses and treatments.

The interesting fact is that the staff are from various parts of India and abroad and are the best at what they do. The love for their job and their knowledge about the art is palpable. The staff knows who you are and what programme you are in before formal introduction. Thanks to the reception team who have your photo taken while checking-in and circulated and everybodys knows you before being introduced. Cool isnt it? I hadnt seen something like this before.

Food takes a special mention because generally when there is wellness and fitness involved, the food takes a back-seat considering our palate. The food served at Atmantan is healthy, soul-gratifyingly tasty and well presented. Thanks to the chef and his garden which is the source for all home-grown and organic herbs, vegetables, fruits and they also have home-bred cows and buffalos, so now you know from where the tasty cheese and nutritious milk are coming from. The staff are well trained and wont mind telling you that they dont serve chai/coffee or we have exceeded the prescribed limit of food while ordering. The food colours are added using naturally grown edible flowers. Having a lavish meal with a lake view is like icing on a cake. There are 3 different dining areas and an uber-chic caf for those in-between meals.

The services menu is long, divided between wellness and fitness. The staff is diverse with expertise including Ayurveda doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, fitness trainers, pranic healers and yoga teachers, chefs and the team and last but not the least the housekeeping team make sure that you are well taken care of and your mind, body and soul are coddled into doing and feeling better.

This luxurious resort swanks 106 rooms (including villas) that are pitched across the hill at different heights and have lake-facing view and balconies; some have gardens too. The Mango Tree Villa is the ultimate manifestation of grandeur with stunning interior and private pool which is also, an infinity pool, thatched gazebo, private spa room, massive gym, open air shower, steam room, sauna with UV light treatment chamber (first of its kind in India) and butler service.

The gym or fitness centre is a marvel to a fitness freak. It has world class mean machines for various work out sessions. Cardio machines, functional studio (trx workout centre), spinning centre, vibrating plate it burns three times more calories than compared to a normal workout session, PHEW!), yoga studio, Pilates studio, meditation centre, amphitheatre (for both yoga and meditation in open air) and indoor salt pool for aqua-jam and other water-based workout sessions. There are exclusive colonic hydrotherapy rooms, they do open colonic treatment and enema treatment. They have global spa treatments from Hamman to Taoist spa to Thai massages to our very own Ayurvedic treatments. Treatment rooms are named after apsaras and interiors and lighting are set as per the treatment you are taking. Its a very soothing and staggering experience. There is a huge Buddha statue seated over a lotus pond and overlooking the lake amidst mountains which is a beautiful and happy sight to see and feel.

The best thing about this is tranquillity sans noise and net connectivity. So, it is a digital detox as well. Kids below 14 are not allowed and it goes without saying that caffeine, alcohol and smoking is not permitted in the premises. They have meticulously planned everything here and it doesnt come as a surprise that it took 8 long years to build this fascinating property with its features. The packages are also planned accordingly. Ranging from 3 nights stay to 28 days stay, this place is a whizz to experience and explore through ones own self. Atmantan is atma or soul cleansing in true sense. Relish the sweet surprise of walking into the room to a bathtub with herbal oils and flower petals. The signature spa treatment at Atmantan for me was Chi Nei Tsang massage, an olden Taoist treatment for digestive problems. I felt rejuvenated and my bloating had drastically reduced. Didnt know we have tension knots in tummy too. Thanks to the Doctor and the team for stocking up the room with natural face packs, I could feel the difference in 3-4 days.

They had guests coming from across the globe already. Felt good to see a lot of single women relaxing and having a ball with self. Truly recommend this place for those who are looking for some soul searching, wellness, fitness or plain relaxation and staycation. This is a place for every season but it comes alive in monsoons with apparently 28 waterfalls across the mountain ranges wit a natural pitter patter of rain drops which serve as a visual treat. This has also become a new honeymoon destination for couples who are looking for a detox after those loud and hectic big fat Indian weddings.Walk into Atmantan and you will totally get to pamper your mind, body and soul! Pump up your aura with the bliss of nature, revitalize your inner being with the fantastic therapies and spend an idyllic time that you have longed for, Atmantan awaits you!

There are a lot more exhilarating things happening next week through the new year in January 2017. Atmantan is hosting renowned and world's best healing therapist in the World, Jacqueline Bourbon from 19th December to 10th Jan 2017. She is a Healing Medium, Spiritual and Transformational Teacher, Coach and a sage. Jacquelines healing works on many levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. She discerns unhealthy patterns and will work with guests to re-pattern and resolve the underlying causes of their problems.  A consultation with her is the first step to self-transformation. Her sessions always incorporate individually tailored energy work, meditation, counselling and healing to ultimately establish a new, healthier and more satisfying way of living.

This spafinder award winning resort has come up with exciting offers for this new year 2017. Make the most of it if you are planning to visit around this time.

Belgium, a country that many may not see as a lavish destination to visit in Europe, actually holds many interesting facets not known to many. When it comes to chocolates and waffles they can easily vouch for being number one. But theres more to this land than sweets! This small country is divided into the Flemish-speaking Flanders in the north and the French-speaking Wallonia with the capital of Brussels stashed in the middle. While the winters can get brutally cold and the monsoons can be a pain through the year, the best time to visit would be from mid-April to October. Youll also get to experience a slew of the hottest (as in the most vibrant) summer festivals during this time. These fests rest at the pinnacle of tourist attraction. Make room for the unconventional as we give you ten of the most unique things to see or do in Belgium.

Gent(Ghent)

When tourists think of Belgium, they will end up gallivanting through Brussels or Bruges, and miss out on this unique European treasure that is Gent(Ghent). Having the perfect balance of medieval splendor with an industrial touch, Gent(Ghent) is absolutely breathtaking to stroll through. One of the highlights includes the Saint Bavo Cathedral known for its beautiful architecture. The Ghents castle and a little gin market on the Groentenmarkt and historic museums such as the Museum of Fine should also make it to your sightseeing list.
You can also avail great deals and discounts on bargain with TripHobo Hotels!

Werrengarenstraat

The streets of Ghent never looked better with this particular alley dedicated solely to street art. As an initiative to keep graffiti off of the historic buildings in the main city, this street has transformed into an explosion of creative juices. It has constantly evolved from its initiation at the Ghent Festivities festival way back from 1995! And now remains an institution for superb street art!

Comic Strip Centre

Dedicated to the vibrant comic and animation industry of Belgium, this center was first established by architect Jean Breydel and comic artists Francois Scuiten, Bob de Moor, Alain Baran, and Guy Dessicy. Showcasing some of the legendary pieces of comic illustrations from Spirou and Tintin, this exhibit also puts a focus on Belgian comics. The stunning building designed in the Art Nouveau style of 1905 is divided into different sections. If you search long and hard youll also be able to find rock paintings, traces of Japanese martial arts and the Medieval times, but mostly focused on European comics. The centre inspired the Comic Route, which is a trail of murals plastered along the walls of Belgium. Talk about street art inspo!

The Ardennes

If youre the outdoorsy type that doesnt want to stay confined to city life, you need to surely head to the southeastern part of Belgium. The Ardennes is the lushest, green and picturesque landscape sprinkled through the medieval town. Youll also find the dramatic cave systems in the Meuse, Ourthe, and Lesse valleys. Head south towards Spa and Stavelot perfect for hiking and canoeing and exploring the countryside.

Clothespin structure- Liege

Something really wacky awaits in the outskirts of Belgium in a small town called Liege. The Chaudfountaine Park holds a giant clothespin structure grasping onto a hill in the middle of the park. It surely is the perfect bizarre photo-op destination giving an illusion like no other.

The Blue Forest

This is a mystical sight to see as youre greeted by a lush carpet of bluebells in the Blue Forest, also known as the Hallerbos. Unique for the density and growth of these bluebells, the Blue Forest especially comes alive during the months of April to May. If youre lucky you might just run into the friendly creatures of the woods from rabbits to deer!

Nemo 33

Nemo 33 welcomes you to the deepest indoor swimming pool in the world! For those deep sea diving enthusiasts, this is the place to be. Even if youre not a veteran but have an interest in the sport, Belgium hosts the only facility to practice and was started by diver and traveler John Beernaerts. In the hopes of instilling a centre for those who may not have the luxury of exploring the coast of Bora Bora, Nemo 33 is perfect. With levels reaching to 113 feet down, you are also exposed to military training, different packages, while visitors get to see through the clear glass windows!

Delirium Caf

Step into this divine basement bar holding an inventory of over 2,000 different kinds of beer! So if youre a beer fan and want to have a taste (literally) of each and every one, step into Delirium Caf. Adorned with the pink elephant symbol at the entrance, the bars walls are plastered with iconic posters, ad-panels and neon signs from over the years. Definitely a must visit!

Doel

A few lines in this ghost town wont be enough to describe it. Once having a population of about a thousand back in the 13th century, it soon began to deteriorate as officials hoped to shut it down. It became a target for extra space for the expansion of shipping docks but soon enough residents lost the battle to the government. It now stands as a spooky and desolate town with broken down houses covered in street art. From torn wallpaper to scattered remnants of personal belongings, each and every house holds a history that has faded over the years. This eerie environment may have a sad past but makes it to our list of fascinating places to capture on camera if youre visiting Belgium.

Mini Europe

A tour of Europe can be found right here in the capital of Brussels, Belgium. Created way back in 1989, this park features miniature monuments and live action models, over 30 of them, of renowned structures! Youll find a mini Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Mount Vesuvius, and even the Big Ben! Take time to check out the intricacy with which every detail of these monuments has been made.

Bet youre quite surprised to know this city is a world of weird wonders! All the more reason for you to explore Belgium and enjoy!
