"He was a nice man who invented beer" - Plato

Oktoberfest guide for beginners

Beer was the first alcoholic drink that I ever tried. I remember it was the day our graduation results were out. While some of us were celebrating, the others were trying to get over the fact that ‘they didn’t make it’ :D nonetheless, we had a great night! (How was your first encounter with beer? Do let me know in the comments below) Okay, moving on to Oktoberfest now. I am sure everyone knows of "Oktoberfest" and I am also sure it is on your travel bucket list (It sure is on mine). Locally known as Wiesn, this is the world’s largest beer festival that is celebrated in the Bavarian capital of Munich. Spread over 16 to 18 days, this festival starts on the second-to-last Saturday of September and ends on the first weekend in October.

Now you must be wondering why call it Oktoberfest when it is celebrated in September? While the first ever Oktoberfest did take place in the month of October (Oct. 12, 1810, to be precise) today the celebrations start in the month of September owing to the better weather conditions. The nights in September are a little warmer which lets people enjoy without feeling chilly.

Are you gonna be a first timer at the Oktoberfest? You have come to the right place. Scroll down coz we have brought you the Ultimate Oktoberfest Beginners’ Guide that will answer all your when, where and why! Don’t forget to bookmark this page

How did it all start?

It all started with a fairy-tail wedding, when the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig got married to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The 12th day of October in the year 1810, this day was celebrated with great pompous. With the entire city at the palace gates, celebrations lasted over five days. The main event of the Oktoberfest was in fact supposed to be a horse race. What followed was a round of annual celebrations that became more elaborate every passing year.

Oktoberfest, as it is celebrated today

Let’s just call it a big party that lasts over two weeks where the entire world is invited. You get the picture, right? There is joy all over, the crowd is boisterous, the atmosphere is merry, the beer is flowing (of course ), people are gorging on grilled chicken and the band is pumping the traditional German drinking songs like “Eins … zwei … g'suffa! Prost!”

  • Beer - Brew|Enjoy|Empty|Repeat

Ah! The beer. The beer served at the Oktoberfest is called Märzen. This beer comes from one of Munich's six breweries—Paulaner, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Augustiner, Hofbräu and Löwenbräu. Adhering to the strict German Standards of beer brewing, Märzen is bottom-fermented and is lagered for at least 30 days. With 6% alcohol that precisely makes use of the four ingredients; barley, hops, malt, and yeast; beer in Oktoberfest is served in the Maß, a one-litre beer mug.

  • Food - Enjoy it all

what to eat at Oktoberfest

How can we forget the food? Customary varieties include Hendl (spit-roasted chicken), Blaukohl (red cabbage and apple dish), Steckerlfisch (charcoal-fired fish-on-a-stick), Weißwürste (steamed white veal sausages with sweet mustard sauce), Kaiserschmarrn (sugary pancakes served with raisins), Dampfnudel (steamed honey-dumpling), Gebrannte Mandeln (pan-roasted, sugar-glazed almonds), Zuckerwatte (cotton candy), and pretzels. Now you don’t want to be drinking empty stomach, do you?

  • Music - You can't OD on music ;)

Oktoberfest songs

Brass bands performing folk music, marches, and polkas add to the perky atmosphere that Oktoberfest is. As the nights start coming closer, the music starts getting louder. People begin to sing, swinging their beer mugs while some dance and sway on top of the tables. Offering a toast to “contentment, congeniality, and relaxation,” the band will perform "ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit" before each break.

With airlines releasing seats almost a year prior, it is recommended that you secure your seats at the earliest. Next, you need to book your accommodation. Now this can be tricky, with many options to choose from, you will be spoilt for choices. There are so many places you can visit near Munich. Indulge in the Roman Affair; Treat Yourself to These Delightful Food & Drinks in Rome!

I am one of the millions who have always dreamt of going to Rome. The eternal city that has had a past of thousands of years, served as the capital of the empire that once ruled the world, leaving its mark on thousands of other cities and towns. The rich culture that patronised art and fine living is evident, even today.

As you walk past the beautiful structure that are easily a thousand years old, you can’t help but be amazed at the city’s vibrant, diverse and rich architecture, culture and heritage.

And what makes Rome so quintessentially Roman, is its undying vibe. Speaking of which, we land on the vibe given away by the Italian food served in Rome.

Petite cafes dot the cobbled-streets with cute table settings and warm locals inviting you in, with a smile. You can smell the fresh coffee being brewed ready to be served with a hot meal, glasses clinging as people savour fine drinks and wood-fired ovens heating up, as you pass by.

There is so much love that is served with the Italian food, that it is hard to not like the goodness. Apart from the fact that Italian cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines across the world, what makes food in Rome special is that presents authentic recipes amalgamated with an international touch, to suit the palate of everyone who comes here.

There’s so much to Italian food, that it is difficult to handpick the best! How did I manage to sort out this list in the disorienting richness of the Roman cuisine? My secret was- Withlocals

Withlocals is a great concept that can guide you through a foreign city. A community of locals and travellers around the world, Withlocals offers you an insight to the inner vibe of the city and makes you a traveller, not just a tourist!

Here’s my personal guide to the best Rome food & drinks:

1. Pizza Bianca

Looking for a quick yet delicious dish for breakfast? Pizza Bianca is what you should try. Freshly prepared every morning, this simple breakfast item is an Italian flatbread, with crispy edges. Seasoned with sea-salt and olive oil, Pizza Bianca is the one of the most minimalistic breakfast Roman breakfasts.

2. Fritti

This is a savoury snack, available both in vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The main ingredient is marinated in olive oil, dipped in egg-flour batter and deep fried is the base of this recipe. The main ingredient is generally Calamari, baccala (salt cod), zucchini or something as simple as rice balls!

3. Pizza

When in Rome, do it as Romans do. Pizza in Italy is a very personal, intimate affair. Travel a few kilometres and you’ll be served a different style of pizza. While the birthplace of Pizza, Naples is to south of Rome, Roma has its own version of this world-famous food. The pizza in Rome is paper thin with absolutely no edges and charred crust. Toppings are, well, everything under the sun!

4. Carciofi alla Romana

A dish so popular and so native to Rome, Carciofi alla Romana or Roman-style artichokes are a must-try in Rome. Each household and restaurant has a different recipe for it and farm-fresh artichoke is the star of the dish. Seasoned with herbs and white wine, this gently cooked dish is packed with flavours!

5. Cacio e Pepe

Think minimalism, think Cacio e Pepe. A classic Roman pasta dish, Cacio e Pepe has just a couple of ingredients, but those, can rock your world! Black pepper, Pecorino Romano cheese and starchy water drained from boiled pasta, that’s all that goes in. But served hot on a cosy evening in a restaurant in Trastevere, that’s all you really need!

6. Rigatoni alla Pagliata

You have to hunt down a classic trattoria in Rome to taste this dish. One of the integral recipes of the Roman Cuisine, this dish calls for a calf meat, a calf who has only been fed with its mother’s milk. Thin strips of the calf are cut and after few complex treatments, a creamy residue is born. Served with rich tomato sauce, it is indeed, a meat-lover’s delight!

7. Carbonara

No culinary experience in Rome can be complete without this fantastic dish that has been savoured by foodies all across the world. Made with simple ingredients like hard cheese, pepper and eggs, the real king of this dish is the bacon! The dish is fairly new to Rome, going back only a 100 years ago.

8. White Wine

Before a meal, after a meal, or in between, nothing goes so well with Roman food as White Wine does. Frascati and Castelli Romani are the best kinds offered in Rome, but being the Mecca of White Wine, there’s no bad choice really. The delicate taste of the wine brings out the subtle flavours of the food.

9. Italian Coffee

Warm, strong, freshly brewed; this is the go-to drink in Rome. And while you can have a milky for breakfast, local recommend having it only before noon. For the rest of the time, your dose of caffeine can be the other variations of coffee like Caffè lungo, Caffè ristretto or Caffè corretto that comes with a dash of alcohol!

10. Gelato

Just like pizza, Roman Gelato might not be the best one you’ll taste in Italy. But hey, it is perhaps better and of course, more authentic than the rest of the world. There are plenty of Gelato places in the city that serve variety of flavours of this rich desert. When in Rome, make sure you try the fruit and nut flavoured ones!

This list, is of course, my personal recommendations on what to eat in Rome. To experience the extravagant culinary affair of Rome, you can opt for an awesome local guide & host who can introduce you not just to the local food, but also the culture of the city!

An Inside Story Of Leh Bike Trip - Not A Rosy Ride But Totally Worth It

$

Fondly referred to as the Jai-Veeru of TripHobo, Jitendra (Jitu) and Kuldeep are a part of our marketing team along with being keen biking enthusiasts! While that’s one fun combo already, these two are known for their jovial attitude, keeping the vibe of the team fun and reveling. After a long stretch of work, the two took off for a rather adventurous sabbatical last month. To quench their thirst for thrill and feat, Jitendra and Kuldeep chose the ultimate biking destination of Leh, Ladakh. Here’s the inside story on all their planning, routes, insightful tips derived from personal experiences and some epic shenanigans.

Trip duration: 14 days

Total distance covered: 3329 kilometres

Places covered: Delhi, Amritsar, Bannihal, Sringar, Kargil, Leh, Pangong, Nubra Valley, Darcha, Manali and Shimla

Trip Cost: INR 57,000 PP

Bikes: Continental GT and Thunderbird 350

Leh Bike trip

It is evident why the two chose Ladakh as their destination. Challenging terrains and unpredictable weather conditions overshadowed by the surreal beauty of the region were the pioneering factors. Indeed, it took a vast research on their end. From determining the best routes, zeroing on one of the many bike rentals in Delhi (for Jitu), transporting his own bike to Delhi (Kuldeep) and coordinating with friends in Leh; the trip was full of unexpected events and making a lifetime of memories.

Speaking of unexpected events, this travel story is such that had to be altered on the second day itself! Originally this plan was what Jitu and Kuldeep were set for. However, it had to be altered due to a curfew in Srinagar, that can be said to be a protagonist in the consequent changes. But what is a riding adventure without some fuel shortage, punctured tyres and even missing out on a day?! Read on.

Delhi:

The two chose to have Delhi as their start and finish destination. On Day 1, the much-anticipated expedition began with the first stop, Amritsar

Amritsar:

Located at a distance of 520 kilometres, Delhi to Amritsar was covered in a duration of 9 hours. With a stop for a night, they squeezed in a visit to the Wagah Border and Golden Temple, followed by a feast of a Langar.

Bannihal:

Day 2 marked the entering of the pinnacle territory, Jammu and Kashmir. Following the original itinerary, but the 14 hours journey, over 440 kilometres had a surprise in store. The ride identified the essence of this biking adventure- expect the unexpected! The quest began with an unanticipated delay owing to a curfew in Srinagar, that was observed for Burhan Wani's death anniversary. This lead to the Jawahar tunnel to be closed for two days. So, they had to go till the tunnel, to find it shut and come 15 kilometers back to accommodate themselves for Day 2 and 3. This event did not dampen their spirits. However, losing out on a day of the itinerary, had them missing a visit to the Tso Moriri lake, planned with the three friends who had already reached Leh on Day 2.

Kargil:

View from Lamayuru Monastery

The Bannihal-Kargil ride, bequeathed the two with the characteristic echoes of the engine sound and it was here when they got that “arrived” feeling. The ride took about 15 hours to cover a distance of 345 kilometres.

A night’s stay on Day 4 had them looking forward to their next destination, Leh. The preceding region tested their endeavour too with one of the bike’s petrol coming to reserve while crossing the mountainous pass of Zoji La. Following a research that suggested petrol pumps on the Srinagar-Kargil route, these guys thought of carrying on till Sonmarg where they had planned a pitstop anyway. However, on reaching Sonmarg, they found out there was no petrol pump there! Having been lucky to reach Drass with that quantity of petrol, life struck again only to discover that there was no petrol pump in the entire town. The ride till Kargil which was still 54 kilometres away was covered relying on half a litre petrol from another bike and nature’s bounty of plentiful downward slopes. Kargil was like the dawn of a dark night, with finally a petrol pump in sight!

Leh:

View from Leh Palace

Day 5 was characterized by a 9-hour ride, over 228 kilometres and a visit to the stunning Lamayuru Monastery, iconic Magnetic Hill and serene Pathar Sahib. This is where the two made some fond memories of local food and beer. After exploring these attractions and chilling out at the local cafes, next day (Day 6) was scheduled for local sightseeing. Into their sixth day of the expedition Jitu and Kuldeep visited some of the best things to do in Leh- Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Hall of Fame, and Main Bazaar.

Leh Main Bazaar

Pangong Lake:

Pangong Lake

The ride to Pangong Lake, through the summoning Chang La pass stretches over 163 kilometres. Ideally the ride can be covered in 7-8 hours but owing to harsh weather conditions of snowfall and rainfall it took 11 hours. This called for a night’s halt on Day 7 before heading back to Leh. The Pangong Lake and its beauty was just what they needed at the median of their adventure. On Day 8, Leh beckoned once again to tread further to the Nubra Valley. This was when some more avenues for local food was explored.

Pangong Lake

Nubra Valley:

Khardungla Top Towards Nubra

Leh to Nubra Valley took about 6 hours 30 minutes to cover a distance of 121 kilometres via the landslide-prone Khardung La pass, on the exciting Day 9. This was the shortest route of the entire transit, giving enough window to check out the incredible Diskit Monastery along with the quaint village of Hunder. Revering this as the last destination in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, our very own Jai-Veeru revered the valley by taking a Bactrian camel safari in Hunder! After spending a night here on Day 10, they headed back to Leh again to further travel to Jispa on Day 11.

Hunder Desert Safari

Darcha:

Taglang La

After leaving a piece of paradise behind, the two took on a 342-kilometre ride over a span of 13 hours in the supremely picturesque region of the Lahaul and Spiti district. High on the beauty of the region, a punctured tire shook up the two! This called for a stopover for the night on Day 12 in Darcha that further demanded a change in the original plan of traveling to the Jispa village on the same day. What came along with this unexpected alteration was a very memorable stay at a road side dhaba in Darcha! The puncture was sorted in Jispa the next day.

Darcha Dhaba

Manali:

On the second last day of the adventure, They reached Manali after a ride of 8 hours over 153 kilometres that was noted with dense fog and negligible visibility at Rohtang Pass. The ride along the River Beas with endless views of apple orchards and a burgeoning sight of civilization was no less than withdrawal symptoms of the mountain desert.

Zero Visibility at Rohtang Pass

Shimla:

Day 13 had them in the last leg of the journey, in Shimla after riding 265 kilometres that took about 11 hours 30 minutes. Ideally taking about 7-8 hours, Kuldeep’s bike’s puncture caused the additional delay. It was a long journey, so the best decision was to spend the night here before summing up the biking expedition at Delhi. Into the finale of the adventure, the trip saw yet another thwart. With four spokes of the wheel broken, that actually caused the tired puncture, Kuldeep had the handle of his bike shaking vigorously only to find himself looking for a jugaad to aid a ride till Delhi! Lying at a distance of 350 kilometres, Delhi was finally and safely reached in 10 hours, on Day 14!

Tips for travellers:

  • Bike rental

Riders with bikes rented from outside J&K, be wary of local Leh bike union when you go from Leh to Nubra and Pangong. They have a checkpost before South Pullu (on the way to Nubra) and just after Karu (on the way to Pangong) to check if you have a private vehicle or a rented one. Riders with rented bike from outside J&K are not allowed to go from Leh to other attraction points. In this situation, you will be asked to rent one from the local vendors. Luckily, Jitu and Kuldeep got through but there were some riders who got stuck.

  • Petrol pumps

There is no petrol pump in Sonamarg and Drass. You can find petrol pumps on the way from Srinagar to Sonamarg. At all times, it is better you keep some extra fuel with you in jerry cans.

  • Accommodation

Choose a homestay for your accommodation instead of a hotel. Leh people are wonderful hosts. The two stayed at Chamtse Guest house and the experience was amazing owing to their great hospitality.

Local food and eateries:

Timok

  • Lala's Art cafe in Main Bazaar, Leh
  • Beer at Sangam bar - the only place in entire Nubra Valley where you get beer
  • Local food in Leh- Khambir (Local bread), Timok, Thukpa (Khambir and Timok, you will get in a homestay only. Ask your hosts to make these for you)
  • Non-vegetarians, don't forget to have Kashmiri Wazwan when in Kashmir
  • Seabuckthorn juice - Leh's local berry

Guilty as charged we maybe for urging you to shut up and get on the bike!

Halo or Dugga Dugga? Here's a List of Places to Visit in Mumbai for Navratri!

Shravan maas or the month of Shravan marks the commencement of festivities in India, celebrated in various forms all across the nation. The following four months are a period of festive glee and merry making in some of the most elaborate jamborees. Ganpati, Navratri, and Diwali are three festivals that hold a special anticipation for many. Even of these three, Navratri is one dear festival, more so because it is the longest festival in the Hindu calendar. Nav meaning nine and ratri meaning night, see extravagant jollification for all the nine days in various manifestations.

Of all the manifestations, it is the dandiya and Durga pooja that are most evident. And if you thought these were best experienced in Ahmedabad or Kolkata respectively, hold on till you check out what Amchi Mumbai has for you. Here’s a lowdown on how Navratri celebrations in Mumbai unfold along with some of the best places to visit in Mumbai for Navratri.

Durga Pooja

Not just Bengalis, but Durga Pooja or Pujo (to sound more authentic!) is something the whole world looks forward to! While that might sound a tad too exaggerated, just hop into any of the pandals and you will see a super-Cosmo crowd drooling over delicious khichuri served with tangy sweet tomato chutney, tastiest torkari (mixed vegetables), benguni (my favorite), papad for an exciting crunch and the eternal dearest paayesh (sweet delicacy prepared from rice, milk, sugar and condiments). And this is just what a usual day, starting from Panchami or the fifth day of Navratri till Navami or the ninth day looks like. Night draws a beautifully contemporary avatar with food stalls serving delicious egg rolls, kathi rolls, and a whole lot of Indo-Chinese delicacies, among an endless list of bona fide Bengali desserts. Ummmm.. chamcham, sandesh, mishti doi, roshogullas, kalojams; trust me, the list is endless!

That’s that for food. Coming to the actual celebrations, the five days give you an opportunity to witness delightful customs. The highlight of my many reminiscences, I am half Bong by the way, is the incredible Dhunachi dance. Dancing around a dhaki or the one playing drums, with a huge incense burner in hand, as if in a state of nirvana is the most beautiful sight of beautiful Bengali women dressed in lovely Baluchari Sarees and of course, the trademark been or red bindi!

You can be a part of this five-day celebration by visiting these most popular Durga Puja pandals in Mumbai mentioned below. Or just go “pandal hopping” for the ultimate, fulfilling experience of this festival honouring Shakti or the female force! If possible try attending a pushpanjali in the morning which can turn out to be one divine revelation.

Ah, Goa! Where do I even start? Or do I need to? I mean does Goa need any introduction at all? Prolly the most easy-going place to be in India, Goa is tucked comfortably between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats and is blessed with abundant natural beauty, making it one of the (chuck it!) the most loved state in the country, I would say. Goa was my first ever holiday destination at the age of 4. I remember looking that the sea and wondering if I could just go running and play in its waters. Then I remember eating a delicious fish for lunch :P Over the years, I have travelled to Goa a number of times, with family, and with friends, trust me, this little slice of paradise has not failed to surprise me.

Goa is easy to access. With an international airport, two major railway stations and a National Highway running across the state, options to reach Goa are plenty. Within Goa, I would recommend hiring a bike (do not forget to splash that sunscreen) and whizz through curvy roads that run along the coastline; though taxis and buses are also available.

Goa probably has the widest range of accommodation available, from private golf courses and beaches to shanty beach huts, to the recently popular Airbnb’s. You can choose to lay in your bed and look at the palm fringed beaches and the endless sea; or sunbathe on one of the beach chairs (again, do not forget to splash that sunscreen )

best beaches in north and south Goa

Insider’s tip: Goa accommodation is cheaper by almost 25% to 30% during the months of monsoon.

A Lil bit of Goan history:

The earliest mentions of the state of Goa were found in the 3rd century B.C during the rule of the Mauryan Empire. For the next 750 years or so, Goa was ruled by various Hindu dynasties like the Chalukyas, the Shilaharas, and the Kadambas. What followed was a brief rule by the Muslims, who used Goa as a port for ships carrying horses to Hampi. By the 16th century, Vasco da Gama landed in Goa and the Portuguese ruled over Goa for the next 450 years. On December 17, 1961, the Indian government ordered a military invasion and liberated Goa.

With such diverse history, the state of Goa has managed to retain a little bit of each of its previous empires and offers its visitors a great melange of the best of both the worlds.

Let us move to the more fun part now, shall we?

With a coastline running 125 kilometres from North to South, Goa beaches are mainly divided into North Goa Beaches and South Goa Beaches. While some of them are very touristy, a few others are secluded and private.

Scroll down and you will find some kick-ass beaches Goa has to offer. These best Goa beaches are not to be missed, sure, but there is so much more to do here. So, don’t just visit the most famous Goa beaches but you also get a chance to touch upon the nearby quaint little beaches, churches and shacks.

The best places to visit when on an adventure holiday in Hawaii

$

Did you know that, according to Trek America Travel, “Hawaii produces almost a third of the world’s supply of canned pineapples”? I have a fun fact of my own to add… Honolulu, one of Hawaii’s hot spots, is where the singer Bruno Mars comes from! OK, maybe that isn’t as fun a fact as the pineapples!

For those of you who are hungry to explore the local traditions, to eat the local cuisine and to do more daring activities such as snorkelling in Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve; Hawaii, which comprises of six islands, will not disappoint.

Popular tourist attractions include the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, and The Pu’uhonaunau O’Honaunau National History Park.

There are many tours with specific itineraries which will take you to these places and do all the hard work for you. These tours include USS Missouri, Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbour Tour and the Punchbowl Sightseeing Tour.

The Volcanoes National Park is rich with geological, biological and cultural history, with many historical sites such as the 1790 footprints. Those of you who are information sponges and love history and archaeology will also love the Bishop Museum, which is Honolulu’s largest museum and is in Oahu. It holds an abundance of artefacts from Hawaii and from other Pacific Islands. The Honolulu Museum of Art is also a must see, with 500,000 works of arts spanning over 50,000 years.

If you’re creative or a kinaesthetic learner, then you will love the Polynesian Cultural Centre located on the North Shore of Oahu in Honolulu. It holds vibrant parties which include delicious local cuisine, performances of traditional dances and interactive demonstrations of Hawaiian traditions from various villages across all six islands. Paradise Cove on the West Side will also provide you with the opportunity to enjoy traditional crafts and games. After visiting Paradise Cove, you can venture onto a Paina, also known as a luau, meaning “a party with dinner”. This is a widely observed tradition for people to celebrate significant events such as weddings, graduations and birthdays, and is a wonderful opportunity for you to experience the culture first hand.

All six islands, and each village within each island, offer unique traditions and experiences. For more information, Tiffany Hill offers great reviews of attractions in Honolulu, and triphobo.com will help to plan your trip from hotels and flights to Hawaiian attractions.

3 Ways to Stay Safe While Renting Home Stays

Airbnb made its public debut in August 2008. Since then, Airbnb has become one of the most popular online destinations for travelers seeking unique and affordable accommodations. The site allows users to host guests in their homes and enables travelers to book private or shared living spaces all over the world.

In the years since Airbnb was founded, most rentals go smoothly. However, the site has experienced its fair share of horror stories, such as theft, drug usage, stabbings, and X-rated parties. But this shouldn’t deter travelers from using the site to book a place to stay. Most users have a nearly perfect experience, and Airbnb is constantly updating its policies and terms of service to ensure the safety and privacy of both hosts and guests. If you’ve recently booked an Airbnb or you're currently hunting down the perfect rental, keep the following tips in mind to stay safe.

Read Listings Thoroughly and Ask Questions

Once you think you’ve found the perfect place to book, make sure you read the entire listing. You want to make sure you know everything about the space, such as amenities, house rules, and cancellation policies. You should also read through the reviews left by previous guests and confirm the hosts have verified phone numbers, social media links, and references.

If anything about the listing is unclear, reach out to the host. Airbnb offers a built-in messaging system that makes it easy to ask if there is Wi-Fi or a grocery store nearby. Set clear expectations for your stay and trust your gut. If you get a bad vibe from your conversation, it’s probably best to book with someone else.

Communicate Only Through Airbnb’s Website or App

Sending money or talking to your host outside of Airbnb makes it nearly impossible for the company to protect your private information. It also puts you at a higher risk of fraud or other security issues. Airbnb’s site and app can handle all transactions and conversations.

Prepare for the Unexpected

As with any trip, you can never predict what’s going to happen. So when planning on staying in an Airbnb, it's even more important to be prepared for anything. Do some research on the area and familiarize yourself with major roads or landmarks in case you get lost.

Put together a plan in case of an emergency, and give your family the address of where you’re staying and the contact information for your host. You can even get a travel protection membership from a trusted company. MedjetAssist can arrange medical transportation in case of an emergency, which is invaluable if you’re taking an adventurous trip out of the country.

Airbnb provides travelers with unique experiences that are worth foregoing access to room service or housekeeping. You’ll get the chance to live like a local, and you might even get to meet new people you’d never cross paths with otherwise. If you take the right precautions and keep the tips in this article in mind, you’ll be able to stay safe and head out on the trip of a lifetime.

Madikeri is a Lilliputian town that snuggles in the laps of the Western Ghats. I visited Madikeri for my birthday this year, and let me tell you, I fell in love with this place. It’s a sort of a place that will keep pulling you back. The curvy roads that run through the mountains, the many rich shades of greens, the misty valleys and the aroma of fresh coffee in the air sometimes feels too good to be true. It drizzles every now and then, which only adds to the magic of this place. As you make your way around the town, you will see blankets of freshly harvested coffee seeds laid out to dry naturally under the sun giving this town its rustic charm.

Many of the estate owners have now converted their age-old colonial homes into homestays. Madikeri homestay for family options are many and you will be spoilt for choices when choosing the right one for you. How to reach Madikeri:

Madikeri is accessible by road from Bangalore and Mangalore (and trust me, this road journey takes you through beautiful mountain ranges and many coffee & spice plantations) The nearest airport is located at Mangalore at 120 kilometres while the nearest railhead is located at Hassan at 103 kilometres.

Madikeri is not your typical tourist destination where you have scores of touristy places to visit. If walking through lush coffee estates while listening to the sounds of nature is your thing, I would suggest you start planning your trip. Head to Madikeri today for that much needed green therapy along with a cup of steaming hot freshly brewed coffee.

Booking a holiday can be difficult at the best of times, but when you’re trying to merge two different types of holidays (luxury and adventure), it can be even more frustrating.

However, thankfully, there are a number of ways you can find your dream holiday, and one that unites luxurious features with white-knuckle adventures. Whether you enjoy hiking around undiscovered landscapes or you prefer to try your hand at something new, Italy has got plenty to offer you.

Here are some great tips on how you can achieve that adventure holiday with a touch of style and comfort thrown into the mix:

Book Luxurious Accommodation

One of the most luxurious aspects of any holiday is the accommodation you’re staying in, and this is no less true when you’re embarking on an adventure holiday. There are hundreds of places you can stay that are in a prime location for enjoying your next activity, and this doesn’t have to mean camping in a tent.

Companies like Eurocamp offer holiday homes for all types of travellers. Providing you with comfortable, high-quality accommodation, these parcs come complete with a range of luxurious amenities and are on the doorstep of a number of great locations. So, after your hard day abseiling down a cliff or hiking up a mountain edge, you can return to your accommodation safe in the knowledge that you’ll get a good night’s sleep. And you might even be able to indulge yourself with a spa treatment while you’re at it!

Find the Right Destination with the Best Activities

Different areas of Italy will provide various activities, so you’ll want to check out what area is going to cater for your adventurous spirit.

For example, if you like walking but you don’t want to do anything too strenuous, the Umbrian and Tuscan regions are ideal. They offer a number of great walking routes that allow you to amble through plenty of historic towns. Other popular routes also include Le Marche, Sicily and the Lakes (above Amalfi). But if you prefer something more challenging, you might want to look at the Dolomites, Alpi Marittime national park (Piedmont), Abruzzo or Sibillini (Umbria).

Creating a holiday that caters for all your needs doesn’t have to be hard, it just takes a little research to find the right accommodation and location. Once you’ve found the area that combines luxury with adventure, you’ll be jetting off on your next adventure holiday in no time at all.

Amy's Italian Sojourn - A Trip That Exceeded Her Expectations And Got Etched In The Memory Forever

As they rightly say, ‘Italy is a dream that keeps on returning for the rest of your life’!

When Amy Baber and her partner grabbed an excellent deal on a return flight to Milan, they were more than happy. Apart from it being Amy’s first visit to Italy, its blast of culture and interesting experiences made them instant fans of the country. And now, they can’t wait to return to the country and its ornate cities.

Here’s the first-hand account of Amy’s Italian sojourn.

You can check her detailed step-wise itinerary for Italy here

Trip Duration: 9 days

Placed covered: Florence, Rome and Milan

Trip Cost: USD 4500 for two

Destination 1: Magical, Romantic and Graceful Florence

After a 15-hour long flight from Atlanta to Milan and an hour long train journey to Florence, we checked into our Hotel. We couldn’t resist the magical city of Florence and started our Day 1 in Italy with Piazza San Giovanni. Flaunting some of the best structures of many, that dot the city, the Square was a nice place to be at, especially during a quiet afternoon. Heading towards our next stop, which is the Vasari Corridor, right on the Ponte Vecchio, we decided to spend the evening enjoying the alluring panorama that looked even more adorable with the sun going down.

We relished the dinner at the Golden View restaurant, clinking glasses to a beautiful sunset in Florence.

There’s so much to do in Florence, especially if you love art. We made sure we followed our itinerary pretty much to the T, except we gave a miss to the Palazzo Pitti and Boboli gardens, there just wasn’t time. Thanks to the Firenze card that helped us skip the lines (why wait on a vacation), we could cover a lot in the city.

The second day in Florence was all about visiting the best attractions of the city like Basilica Di Santa Maria Del Fiore, Piazza Della Republica and Piazza Della Signoria. We also had a quick visit to the Accademia Gallery.

In Florence, every cobbled street and lane presents a dramatic experience and the ambience of the entire city is perfect for wanderers like us. Apart from the sightseeing at top spots, we explored the city slowly.

On day 4 of the trip, we took this tour called Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence. We had booked the tour on TripHobo and our guide Gloria walked us through some of the best spots in the countryside Tuscany.

Don’t miss a single thing on your dream vacation! Plan a trip with TripHobo, add attractions, book hotels and tours and get going!

Destination 2: The ethereal, eternal city of Rome

To begin with, we switched our hotel in Rome, from Holiday Inn Express to Hotel Indigo Rome St. George. The latter was just a better fit for the kind of vibe we were looking for, set in a quiet side-street. As we began our Roman expedition, we were amazed how the city has a ruin on every nook. The beautiful streets of the city, although flooded with people from all over the world resonate an ineffable energy.

On the first day in Rome, we visited the legendary Spanish steps and also the Trevi fountain. After spending some time in the central market, we also had a nice evening in Pincio Gardens.

On our second day in Rome, we had an excellent time exploring the ruins of Roman Forum and the Colosseum to name a few.

Rome has uncountable spots that can keep you hooked, Trastevere neighbourhood was our favourite. Escaping the touristy crowd of the rest of this city, we thoroughly enjoyed a couple of meals with fabulous drinks in this stunning, hippie part of the city.

At the end of 3 days in Rome, we chose to spend the whole day at Vatican. Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Gardens occupied most of our day, and also, most of our mind on this day.

Destination 3: Milan - a hit and miss

To be honest, we didn’t expect much from the city. Since we were flying out from Milan, we decided to explore it for a day. The city is fantastic, but mostly an out-an-out business hub.

We loved spending time at the Duomo. We recommend going to the top, the panoramic view is amazing!

Food and Drinks:

In Italy, food is a very serious as well as a very delightful affair. We tried some of the best dishes on the trip. The drinks, especially the wine was another highlight of our gastronomic journey.

Florence will spoil you with choices of food and drinks. Our top recommendations are Ristorante Tijuana for mexican food, Gelateria Dei Neri for gelato and Westin Excelsior Rooftop bar for drinks.

Our recommendations for food in Rome are sandwiches at Donkey Punch, Ombre Rosse for a great dining experience, Tommi's Burger Joint and Bir & Fud.

Travel Tips for Italy:

Based on our experience in Italy, here are the few tips that we would love to share:

  • Make reservations for dinner, always!
  • Get up high!  There are so many opportunities to see the cities from up high.  So even if it costs a few extra euros, do it.  It is worth it!
  • Take home as much wine as possible.  You will thank yourself later.
  • Take the high-speed trains, they are super quick, convenient to hop between cities and exciting as well!

Our experience using TripHobo:

The website is great for managing the day-wise plan, especially since you can actually visualize your trip, including how much time you will spend at each place.

If this exciting experience of Amy doesn’t make you pack your bag and head to Italy, we don’t know what will!

Three Cities Proving There is More to Cuba Than Havana

$

The tranquil Caribbean island nation of Cuba has become a major magnet for tourists all over the world. Its rich history, warm tropical climate and vast array of architectural landmarks all add to the country’s allure. Approximately four million people visited Cuba last year, with capital city Havana being the main attraction.

Whilst the capital city’s charms are not to be underestimated, there is so much more to Cuba than Havana. We take a look at three cities elsewhere that have different things to offer for holidaymakers with a sense of adventure.

Santiago de Cuba

The second largest city in Cuba, Santiago de Cuba marries the best of Cuban and Afro-Caribbean culture together. On the east of the island, it has a rich culture and some of the country’s most awe-inspiring buildings. The Castillo de San Pedro, a 17th century fort that dominates the local skyline, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 20 years now.

Santiago de Cuba’s culture is a major selling point. Most music genres associated with Cuba started here, most notably salsa. On almost every corner, you’ll find a bar or cafe, whilst the hustle and bustle of the city centre will keep boredom at bay, day and night.

Cienfuegos

This southern city is known locally as the Pearl of the South. On visiting, it’s easy to see why. It is almost surrounded by a bay of deep, blue water that looks great at any time of day. As for the city itself, Cienfuegos’ historic centre is another World Heritage Site, giving history buffs plenty of reason to explore.

For an authentic Cuban holiday, a stroll along the streets and waterfronts of Cienfuegos will more than suffice. Aside from the centre, a short boat ride will take you a few miles south to the coast, where the pristine Playa Rancho Luna lies. If the crowds get too much in Cienfuegos itself, you could do a lot worse!

Santa Clara

A landlocked part of the country, Santa Clara has more green space than many other cities in Cuba. The city centre has at least five parks, but there is plenty more to explore here. Loma del Capiro is a hill overlooking Santa Clara and the surrounding areas. For ramblers who like to be within easy reach of urban comforts, it’s a handy place to visit.

In Santa Clara itself, you’re sure to enjoy a quiet break. There is still a lot to see, particularly the El Mejunje building. The beating heart of the arts and LGBT communities, this cultural venue is a must-visit for fans of theatre, jazz and local art.

Where to Get the Best Cider in Fort Collins, CO

$

0

With so many beer enthusiasts living in Fort Collins, the hard cider hot spots are often overlooked. Whether you’re looking for a quick drink or a bartender to take care of you all night, these are the four best places to go.

1. Scrumpy’s Hard Cider and Pub

Foco’s widest variety of cider is at Scrumpy’s Pub, thanks to Summit Hard Cider and Perry Company operating inside. The taproom is hope to over 40 different ciders and beers. Most beers are Colorado brewed, and all of the cider is made in Fort Collins. Choose from 15 flavors ranging from fruity to dry. If you’re as indecisive as me, the cider flight might be your best bet. They also serve appetizers, and there are gluten free options. The staff is very accommodating, and they take customer critique seriously. So speak up if you have a new ideas to add to the (already unique) menu.

2. Black Bottle Brewery

I love the atmosphere at Black Bottle. Located next to campus, the younger crowd has a casual, laid back vibe. Next to the beer their cider selection seems slim, but each has a similar undertone and aftertaste that is sweet but bold. I’ve never tried a drink here I didn’t love. Find special discounts and happy hour deals posted on their Facebook page.

3. The Fox and the Crow

Branch Out Cider is the best in town. I didn’t give it first place because they have yet to build an original drinking scene, but the flavor is unforgettable. All ingredients are locally harvested and processed, so it’s stocked in tons of Fort Collins liquor stores. You can also find it on tap at The Fox and the Crow, my favorite place in town for a classy meal. You’ll find an entirely different vibe than the rest of my picks, and a large menu of delicious cheeses. Another local spot that sells Branch Out is CopperMuse. Save a few bucks with the coupon. Go beyond the tasting room with a behind-the-scenes tour!

4. Ramskeller Pub

Majority of the cider I’ve consumed has taken place at the Ramskeller. As a CSU alum I may be bias, but this pub has a fine selection of rotating ciders on tap (beer too). I give credit to New Belgium Brewing Company, the financial backbone behind the young brewers program at CSU. The CEO herself has donated over $1 million to the university, and the company over $5 million. Now that on-campus construction has slowed down, stop in at the Skeller for an Angry Orchard (also served at the new stadium). You might even catch a live student performance.

Fort Collins is the U.S. metro area with the largest number of restaurants per resident. You won’t have a problem finding fun drinking spots that serve cider. With so many options, the real trick is finding the best in town. Luckily, I’ve already done it for you. For location and hours, use the map!
